MEASUREMENT LESSON THREE (12 JUNE 2020)

GOOD MORNING GRADE 10s

Today's lesson will deal with three aspects, Volume, Temperature and Time.

VOLUME: A three-dimensional space occupied by a gas, a liquid or a solid substance. In this context, the word CAPACITY also refers to volume.

The basic unit of volume for a liquid is the litre (l), When we divide by a 1000, we convert to the kilolitre (kl). When we multiply a litre quanitity by 100 we convert to the millilitre (ml).

NB:  1 cm= 1ml
        1 cup = 250 ml
        1 tablespoon (tbs) = 15 ml
        1 teaspoon (tsp) = 5 ml

TEMPERATURE: The measurement of how hot or cold a substance or object is.

The basic unit of measurement most commonly used in South Africa for measuring Temperature is the degrees Celsius.

Degrees Fahrenheit is another unit of measurement of temperature that is used more commonly in the USA. The conversion formular will be discussed in Gr 11 and 12. For this year you need to know that Celsius is about one third of the Fahrenhiet reading.
Example: 180 degrees fahrenheit = 60 degrees celsius (180 / 3)
                 25 degrees celsius      = 75 degrees fahrenheit (25 x 3)

TIME: A measurement of the passage of time.

There will be notes attached, showing the basic units of time, please summarise these into your exercise books.
Time can be displayed as analogue. This is time that is displayed with the minute and hour hands on a watch or clock. The analogue clock is divided into 12 equal part/intervals and each interval represents 5 minutes.
Digital display of time is by numbers only.
