LESSON SEVEN (25 JUNE 2020) ALGEBRA

GOOD DAY GRADE 8'S,

TODAY’S WORK IS FROM THE WORKSHEET THAT IS ATTACHED.

We are still looking at equations, this worksheet has examples that you can follow and shows you how to solve for a variable using a one-step method.

I will leave the previous lesson’s explanation here for you to have easy reference.

[When we talk about equations, we are expanding from expressions. An equation has a left hand side, equal to sign, and a right hand side.

Remember to keep your =(equal to signs) aligned as you work down the page to compete your sum. In an equation, you will find a variable. Solving an equation means that you end up finding the value of your variable.

Depending on the question, you may have to first formulate the equation, then you solve for the unknown(variable).

Example: If sending out sms’s costs R1,00, we can write an equation for this information. The equation will help us to find the cost of sending out any number of sms’s (Variable – because it can change)depending on our situation.

Cost = number of sms’s x R1,00
If five sms’s were sent, c = 5 x R2,00
                                       = R10,00

If I spent R40 on sms’s, how many have I sent out?
                             R40 = n x R2,00  (Where n is the number of sms’s)
 40 divided by R2,00  = n
                               20 = n
This means that 20 sms’s where sent out.]
