Forces

Forces and Basic Parts of a Structure:
Technology Notes (p 9 - 10, 15-16)

A force that is able to stretch or pull something apart is called a tensile force.
A force that is able to compress or squash something is called a compressive force.
A support inserted to triangulate a frame is called a brace
Trusses can be made of wood or steel. The different parts of a truss are called members.

A truss  which has a vertical member in the middle is called a king-post truss.
Trusses with two vertical members are called queen-post trusses.

Guys & Ties are used to stabilise tall structures and are under tension.
Struts are used under compression to brace structures. Stays do the same, but they are under tension.
Buttresses are under compression and may be triangular, but they do not necessarily stabilise a structure using triangulation.
Beams or lintels, arches and columns are under compression.

Use your dictionary to look up the words describing the Parts of a Structure on page 15.
Complete the table by matching the correct part of a structure with its description/function.
Present this worksheet for marking in your second lesson of Term 2.
