LESSON ONE 8 FEBRUARY 2021

LESSON ONE: 8 FEBRUARY 2021

GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS

INTRODUCTION LESSON

Good day Dear Grade 9 Learners.

Welcome to the most important year for you as this is the year where you decide on the subjects you will be taking in senior school that will set you on your path to your careers. I hope you see the importance of this year and take every opportunity to ask questions, find your strengths and identify your weaknesses. Come the time for subject choices, you will be informed and base your decision on your future and not what your friends are going to do.

With this in mind, one of the challenges you will face is deciding between choosing Core Maths and Math Lit.

I want to start this lesson by explaining to you that your aim should be 60% and above for every subject, particularly Maths. When it comes to choosing Physical Sciences and Information Systems, one criteria we use is to check your maths marks and see how you perform. As space in these subjects are limited, it goes to the learners who perform well in maths and whose marks are consistently high.

Can this be done even if you performed badly last year? DEFINITELY!

Let us use this year to realise one very important thing…EVERYONE CAN DO MATHS, IT JUST REQUIRES PRACTICE. So if you feel that you are weak in maths, it means you have to practice MORE!

How do you practice? HOMEWORK

Let us now talk requirements for this year. In order to be focused in the maths class, it is important to have all the necessary stationery that the subject needs.

1) A two/three quire hard cover exercise book. It must be covered and labelled before you get to class. (if you have your book from grade 8, I advise that you keep it close by and refer to it every so often.)

2) Ruler

3) Pencils

4) Calculator

5) Pens (I encourage highlighters and colour but this is not compulsory.)

6) flip file. (this is to be handed in to your teacher on the first day that you return to school, please make sure it has your name on it.)

7) AN ADDITIONAL FILE/FOLDER/PLASTIC SLEEVE…this is not compulsory but is encouraged as it can be used for you to keep booklets and worksheets that you will receive throughout the year.

TODAY’S LESSON

1) Your book should be covered and labelled.

2) Your flip file should be labelled and in your bag, ready to hand in on the first day.\

3) In your exercise book, please put in today’s lesson details:

You will remember this exercise from last year. You are to draw this table in your book and go through the activity that allows you to identify the prime numbers from 1 to 100.

·         Circle 1

·         Circle 2

·         Cross of all the multiples of 2.

·         Go back to the beginning and circle the next available number.

·         Cross of the multiples of that number.

·         Go back to the beginning and start again.

·         Repeat this process until you have identified all the prime numbers that exist between 1 and 100.

Make it interesting for yourself so that you will want to look at it and learn from it. Use colour with purpose.

(If you get stuck, refer to your grade 8 book, remember it will be a useful tool for you this year)

4)  Exercise Two: SQUARES AND CUBES AND THEIR ROOTS

Draw another table, this time write out the squares and cubes for the first 15 numbers.
