LESSON ONE 8 FEBRUARY 2021

LESSON ONE: INTRODUCTION TO MATHEMATICAL LITERACY

O8 FEBRUARY 2021

WELCOME TO GRADE 10 AND PARTICULARLY TO THE MATHEMATICAL LITERACY SUBJECT.

·        Please consider these online lessons as a helpful tool to get you geared into this subject. It is not punishment but is aimed at guiding you to be ready for the first day of contact with your teacher.

·       Mathematical Literacy is no less a subject as any of your other 6 subjects. It has its own merit and particularly it is more useful that it is given credit for.

·         The key to this subject is in the WORDS. Please remember at all times, the maths is the easy part, you have done this from grade 1 to grade 9…now we put the maths into a real situation story and ask you to find it. I always tell my learner, its 80 % reading and 20% applying your knowledge. Having said this, please heed these words as it will be echoed throughout the next three years.

·         Let this be your 60% and above mark, don’t shy away from it, embrace it and ALWAYS ASK WHEN YOU GET STUCK!

·         Like with any application subject, this one requires practice…how do you practice??? HOMEWORK….THE BASIS OF HOMEWORK WITH APPLICATION SUBJECTS IS NOT TO PUNISH THE LEARNER BUT RATHER TO PROVIDE THE LEARNER WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE WHAT HE/SHE ALREADY KNOWS. Take advantage of this and thank us for it😊

·         Organisation is the key to success. Being organised and having things in order will assist you greatly. Please bare this in mind, not for this subject but in all aspects of your life.

For this subject, please have the following things:

    1.       A two/three quire hardcover exercise book, which is covered. (all work, including online work will be done in this book). Please remember that this book is the first book of your senior year, keep it. You will need it until your grade 12 final paper is written.

    2.       A calculator.

   3.       Basic stationery (ruler, pencils, pens, eraser…colour pencils/pens and highlighters we encouraged as they assist in making learning clear and effective)

   4.       A flipfile (20 to 30 sleeves please) THIS IS TO BE HANDED IN TO YOUR TEACHER ON THE FIRST DAY, IT SERVES AS YOUR PORTFOLIO OF WORK FOR THE YEAR.

    5.       AN ADDITIONAL FILE/FOLDER/PLASTIC SLEEVE…this is not compulsory but is encouraged as it can be used for you to keep booklets and worksheets that you will receive throughout the year.

WHAT YOU HAD TO DO:

     1.       So today’s lesson was the introduction. I hope you read through all the details above and read them clearly and with purpose. THAT WAS YOUR FIRST TEST!
It means that now you have all the stationery you require, your book is covered, your files are labelled and you have packed the file that has to be handed in to your teacher on the first day and your stationery is organised!
