Visual Art: 3D Art Piece Term 1

Read and underline new and important facts on page 57 in your Visual Arts File.
Complete the exercise at the bottom.
Read the story of Pandora's Box on page 11 in your Drama File.

This is just one of many origin/creation stories.
We find this kind of story in every culture and many of them feature a container of some sort.
In African folklore we often find a calabash or clay pot.

Pandora let all the bad things out, but she also let out hope. There is, therefore, good and bad in everything.
We must find a balance of good and evil within ourselves, to be whole.

Look at the symbols in the image at the top of this lesson.
Which symbols may we use to represent the sins and virtues shown?
E.g. Greed is all about money and power, so a dollar sign ($) would be understood as a symbol for greed.

You are going to make a small clay pot with its lid in class.

You will only have one lesson to do it, so your design needs to be simple and easy to construct.

REMEMBER the clay shrinks when it dries, so all the EDGES MUST BE SEALED and SMOOTHED DOWN. If it is not bonded correctly the pieces will come off.

Pinch pots are quick to make, but they tend to fall apart at the rim, so it is important to keep the thickness of the clay even all the way up the sides. Roll your clay into a ball, stick your thumb into the ball and pinch the edge to create your pot. Turn it in your hand as you squeeze, to make the sides evenly. Do not go too thin on the edges, because the pot needs to support its lid.

Coiled pots are easy to make, but it takes a long time to even out the surface for decoration.  Start with a small disk for the bottom of the pot.  Roll a small piece of clay into a sausage and pinch the ends together. Place it on top of the disk and pinch them smooth. Add a slightly bigger sausage on top to widen the pot and add your layers one at a time until the pot is tall and wide enough. With every layer you add rub the coils with a finger to smooth them together. Remember to save some clay to make a lid.

Slab pots are fast to make, but the edges need to be smoothed together properly or the pot will come apart as it dries.

Flatten the clay and cut out a bottom and lid (the same size) and four matching sides. Pinch and smooth each of the sides to the bottom slab. Now pinch and smooth each side to the two adjoining slabs so that all the sides are sealed.

If you are absent on the day your class make their pots, you will have to bring a DOCTOR's CERTIFICATE.

Lesson Preparation for the date below:

          Grade 8A - 6 March 2023           Grade 8J - 6 March 2023

          Grade 8B - 7 March 2023           Grade 8L - 7 March 2023

On a sheet of exam pad paper:

1] Write your name, surname, admin no, class and the date for your class (above) at the top of the sheet.

2] Make a list of the sins and virtues you think were in Pandora's Box. Draw the universal symbol for each one.

3] Decide on a theme and write it as the heading at the top in the middle of the page. E.g. LOVE

4] Draw a container (with a lid), in an interesting shape, which might show your theme.
    E.g. A heart-shaped box may represent love.

4] Think of symbols or textures which represent your chosen theme.

5] Decorate the outside of your container with some of these elements. No Colour.
(You can use a pencil to draw or press shapes into the clay. You can also cut/shape the symbols out of clay and mould      it onto the container by smoothing the edges into the clay of the container.)

6] Leave space for your admin number in the decoration design.
(You will write it somewhere on the pot, and inside the lid as well.)

7] Plan a surprize symbol, to make out of the clay, to put inside your container.

8] Sign your design in the bottom right corner of the page (like an artist would) - you can use any font/ alphabet.

9] Bring this page to class on the day, because this design is for marks.
